1. Stipendiary Junior Research Fellowship

   This year a stipendiary JRF is open to those whose research is principally in one or more of the following subject areas:

   • Classics
   • Education
   • History (limited to The History of Political Thought)
   • History of Art
   • History & Philosophy of Science
   • Politics & International Studies
   • Theology

2. A H Lloyd Junior Research Fellowship

   There is an additional stipendiary JRF open to those whose research if principally in the following subject area:

   • History (limited to The History of Political Thought)

PLEASE NOTE THAT APPLICATIONS IN ELIGIBLE SUBJECT AREAS WILL BE CONSIDERED FOR BOTH THE STIPENDIARY AND THE A H LLOYD JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS.

Eligibility Requirements Applicable to Both Fellowships

Candidates should note that any research proposed needs to be carried out in the appropriate department in the University of Cambridge.

• Applications are invited from candidates who hold a first degree, or a higher degree or who are studying for a higher degree. Candidates are advised that a Junior Research Fellowship is intended for a researcher early in their career and offers an opportunity to carry out novel research in a stimulating academic environment.

• A successful applicant is expected to be either a graduate student, probably in the later stages of research leading to a PhD Degree (or equivalent), or a post-doctoral researcher who has completed their PhD Degree after 1st January 2023. Candidates who do not fulfil these criteria are unlikely to be considered.
• Candidates should not hold or have held a stipendiary research fellowship at another Oxford or Cambridge college.
• Selected candidates may be invited to the College for interview on or around Wednesday 10th January 2024.
• Candidates must provide details of two referees who have agreed to submit a confidential reference through the website. It is preferable that at least one of the referees should be familiar with the writings to be submitted. One of these would normally be your supervisor.
• The application as well as two referees' references must be submitted online by 12:00 noon on Thursday 19th October 2023.

Written Work

• Shortlisted candidates (expected to be advised by Thursday 2nd November 2023) will be required to submit to the College by Wednesday 8th November 2023 samples of their written work for assessment (in electronic format using the online system). The written work is expected to be papers already published or prepared for publication or chapters for a PhD thesis and no more than around 20,000 words. Because the timetable is tight it is recommended that candidates have work prepared for submission by Wednesday 8th November 2023, should they reach the first short-list.

Fellowship Details

• The Fellowship may be held for a period of up to four years. Tenure of the Fellowship is conditional upon the holder devoting themselves to research to the satisfaction of the College Council. The holder must carry out the research within the University of Cambridge unless the Governing Body is satisfied that they are better able to carry out the research elsewhere. However the Governing Body may permit a Research Fellow to intermit the tenure of the Fellowship after completion of at least their first year for academic purposes provided that the period or periods of intermission shall in no circumstances exceed a total of two years.
• The annual stipend of a Junior Research Fellow is currently £27,396 (with a PhD – point 32 on the University single salary spine) or £23,149 (without a PhD – point 25 on the University single salary spine) provided that the Fellow is not paid from elsewhere (other than remuneration for up to six hours' College or University teaching a week). Fellows living out of College receive a living-out allowance of £4,878 (with a PhD) or £2,232 (without a PhD). The stipend for a Fellow who has additional emoluments (other than that for up to six hours teaching) will be reduced by the total amount of pay received.
• In addition to pursuing research, it is hoped that a Research Fellow will take a full part in College life and activities. They are expected to undertake some undergraduate teaching during term, for which payment will be made at normal supervision rates. The Research Fellow will be a member of the Governing Body, eligible to sit on College committees, with the full privileges of a Fellow. Privileges include seven free meals per week, the possibility of limited financial support for expenses associated with their research, use of a study room or possibly single accommodation in College.
• It should be noted that a successful candidate for a stipendiary JRF who does not have an automatic right to work in the United Kingdom will be subject to the visa requirements of the United Kingdom. The College will give informal advice and assistance but ultimately it will be the responsibility of the candidate to obtain the necessary visa.

Application Timetable

• The application process begins on Wednesday 26th July 2023.
• The application and two references must be submitted through the website by 12:00 noon on Thursday 19th October 2023. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
• Candidates will be shortlisted by the College by Thursday 2nd November 2023.
• Shortlisted candidates will be asked to submit to the College by Wednesday 8th November 2023 samples of their written work for assessment (in electronic format using the online system). The written work is expected to be papers already published or prepared for publication or chapters for a PhD thesis and no more than around 20,000 words.
• Selected candidates may be invited to the College for interview on or around Wednesday 10th January 2024.
• The College hopes to reach a final decision in the week beginning 15th January 2024.
• The successful candidate will normally enter into their Fellowship no later than 1st October 2024.
